Social Action Committee

The Social Action Committee reaches out to the larger community, mobilizing all of us to help feed the hungry, provide shelter for the homeless and bring music and cheerful company to the aged in nursing homes.

The Social Action Committee...

  • Sponsors Cooking for the hungry - once a month on Sunday, and once a month on Monday cooking together at Kol Ami to provide a full meal for a local homeless shelter.
  • Coordinates food and clothing drives at the temple
  • Organizes visits to local nursing homes
  • Supports Westchester food pantries and soup kitchens from funds it raises here at Kol Ami.
  • Supports the [creation] of social justice in America through political advocacy.

In addition, in daily and Shabbat life at Kol Ami, opportunities to abound to participate in acts of kindness and social justice, including

  • Every Bar and Bat Mitzvah student engages in an ongoing Mitzvah project.
  • Every Shabbat and holiday dinner at the Synagogue offers opportunities to make sandwiches and bags of trail mix for the adults and children at a local shelter.
  • 10th grade students travel to the Religious Action Center for a 3-day program in political advocacy.
  • We have collection bins in the Kol Ami lobby for anyone wishing to donate non-perishable food items and baby supplies.
People To People

Members of Kol Ami reach out to fellow members in times of joy and times of sorrow. Members of People to People call bereaved families, help lead or participate in shiva services for families in mourning, visit the sick, welcome newborn babies with gifts of Jewish bedtime stories and Jewish music, and connect with the homebound.

People to People is at the heart of a caring community, fulfilling the "sacred obligations" without measure:

  • To honor father and mother
  • to perform acts of love and kindness
  • to attend the house of study
  • to welcome the stranger
  • to visit the sick
  • to rejoice with bride and groom
  • to console the bereaved
  • to pray with sincerity
  • to make peace when there is strife.
