“One Who Sings Prays Twice” A Hassidic saying

"Praise God with a shofar blast with strings and lute, with drum and with dance

From Psalm 150"

Jews have traveled and lived the world over and have filled the richness of the Jewish experience with rhythms, chords and spices as varied as flamenco to folk, from marjoram to mystical, from curry to klezmer. This fullness is reflected in the depth and diversity of the way we celebrate and study Jewish life.

Choir

Kol Ami offers choirs for adults, teens and children. Our choirs perform at various Shabbat services and special events during the year. Our choirs are organized as follows:

  • Or Chadash (New Light) - Kindergarten through 4th grade
  • Congregational – High school and older

We also have a professional choir that sings for all High Holy Day services, occasional Friday and Saturday Shabbat services and for special concerts and events throughout the year.

Drama Club

dramaThe first performance of the Kol Ami Drama Club was in 1992! During that time, we have seen hundreds of children grow up with the club. The idea for the Drama Club was born at the first annual Kol Ami Temple Retreat at the Circle Lodge. We saw the talent that our kids displayed at the "Saturday Night Live" entertainment show and decided that these kids should have a Jewish arena to showcase their talents. We also felt that a lot of kids never met each other because they lived in different towns, came to Hebrew School and left without ever having a social venue to enjoy together. Thus was born the Drama Club, a place to socialize, show off your talents and meet life long Jewish friends. The ages of the stars have ranged from seven to sixteen. The older kids come back to run the lights and help direct. Drama Club is a hit!

Concerts

Music is an important part of the life of Congregation Kol Ami. Past concerts have presented world-renowned artists including Victor Borge, Isaac Stern and Yasha Heifitz. Additionally, the clergy, congregation and choirs have commissioned and premiered works of many well-known composers including Ben Steinberg, Michael Isaacson and Shrul Glick.

Kol Ami Youth Recital Series (KAYRS) was created in 2000, as a way to showcase the voice and instrumental talents of Kol Ami ‘s youth. Students of all ages are welcome to audition for our annual concert.

Explorations In Jewish Music
